Floods in Eastern Europe
Floods again hit Eastern & Central Europe. Several towns are drowned and thousands of people displaced. We stand in solidarity with people affected by floods and hope that the flood waves do not cause greater damage in their further path and cities such as Budapest and Wrocław, as well as many other towns will win with the flood.
We need to acknowledge that in the coming years, the effects of climate change will be noticeable especially in the form of an increase in the number of climatic extremes, such as heavy rains. Hence, adaptation policies needs to be taken more seriously by Eastern European politicians. We need to adapt our flood and drought protection program to current challenges, especially by increasing the retention capacity of the landscape as natural flood protection: afforestation of the upper reaches of rivers, leaving space for natural spillover of rivers.
