Climate crisis and its impact on Georgia
By the Young Greens of Georgia
The summer of 2023 was quite tragic and tense for Georgia. There were several disasters related to the climate crisis that caused death and injury of many people. The media interest in climate change has also increased.
In this context, Young Georgian Greens decided to create more knowledge and available information in Georgian language because there is a lack of available literature and information about the climate crisis in Georgian language. Most of the literature that is translated on this issue does not cover the local context. Therefore, their social media campaign was about the Climate Crisis and its impact on Georgia.
During the campaign period, six blogs were published:
blog written by their member, Anri Abuladze, was about (un)natural disasters, where Anri highlighted the social and political aspects of so-called natural disasters and how they can be human made.
blog written by Nino Matcharashvili reflected on the disconnectedness of the climate crisis and women's rights.
blog was written by NiNa Gochitashvili, this blog discussed hydro power plants, their impact on local ecosystems and how they are related to climate change.
blog written by Kristine Kukchishvili dealt with zero waste and it reflected on how waste is managed in Georgia, and what the main challenges are.
blog written by Alice Bakradze was about lakes -Madatafa and Kartsakh - located in the Southern part of Georgia that are facing the threat of drying out due to climate change.
blog written by Elisabet Khuntsaria was about greenwashing and the damage big corporations are causing to the environment.

In addition to the blogs, three videos were published:
The first video was an interview with Elene Samukashvili, who is working on disasters and related risks. She talked about how to become less vulnerable during the era of the climate crisis. She talked about different regions of Georgia, and explained what kind of disasters will be activated in each region if the climate crisis won't be stopped.
The second video was recorded by drones, and it reflected the tragic situation on the surface of Madatafa lake. It shows how the lake is covered with seaweed and the devastating impact climate change has on this lake.
The third video was an interview with Elisabed Gedevanishili, who is an environmental researcher and activist. In this video, Elisabed talked about the existing economic system in Georgia and why it is damaging for the environment. Moreover, Elisabed also talked about a just transition and green economic models that we need to follow in order to reduce the impact of the climate crisis.
